It’s easy to think that you did something wrong or that you could’ve done something to stop your parents from separating or divorcing. But remember, your parents’ decision to separate usually involves reasons which are between them.

Your parents' divorce is not your fault.

The 2023 statistics showed that out of 5,649 divorces, 50% involved children under 21. This tells us something important - you are not alone in this experience.

It is not an uncommon life event and affects thousands of families each year in Singapore. It is part of adult relationships that you may not be able to control or prevent.

You are not responsible for their decisions.

While it is understandable to feel upset or confused, your parents separated because it felt like the best choice for them. Their decision is not your responsibility - it never was.
